New Driving Rules in Qatar for Buses, Taxis, Delivery Motorcycles, and Limousines (Effective May 22nd, 2024)

The Ministry of Interior – Qatar recently announced new traffic regulations aimed at improving road safety and traffic flow. These rules, effective as of May 22nd, 2024, apply to specific vehicle types on highways and all roads.

Key Changes:

  • Lane Restrictions: Buses carrying more than 25 passengers, taxis, and limousines are now prohibited from using the left lane on highways with three or more lanes in each direction. This aims to keep the left lane free for faster-moving traffic and improve overall traffic flow.
  • Delivery Motorcycle Lane Use: Delivery motorcycles must now use the right lane on all roads. Exceptions are allowed only when changing lanes, provided the maneuver is initiated at least 300 meters before reaching intersections. This promotes safer lane positioning for motorcyclists.

Expected Benefits:

These changes are expected to bring several benefits to Qatar’s roadways:

  • Improved Traffic Flow: By keeping high-occupancy vehicles and slower-moving traffic out of the left lane, overall traffic flow should improve, especially on highways.
  • Enhanced Safety: With delivery motorcycles using the right lane, the risk of collisions with faster-moving vehicles in the left lane is reduced.
  • Clearer Lane Designation: Clearer lane usage by specific vehicle types should make it easier for all drivers to navigate the roads predictably.
